We're looking for a housemate!

Do you want to live with a community of people who support each other to create a collaborative, joyful house?

Do you want the rent you pay to be put towards making the house where you live better, where you get a say in improving the house, instead of lining a landlords pockets?

We're looking for a housemate to join our housing cooperative, where you'll join a group of people who share responsibility and love for our home.

What is a housing cooperative and how is it different from renting?

Living in a housing cooperative, our rent is reinvested back in to the house, we can decorate as we like and we share responsibility of maintaining and renovating the house.

We own the house so there's no landlord, when you join you'll buy in to the Golem Housing Cooperative company for a £1 share and you'll become an equal shareholder along with everyone else who lives in the house.

What's the house and room like?

  • There are two Golem houses; the original one was bought ten years ago and the second one was brought in 2020.
  • You'll be living in the original house where there are currently six adults, one part time teenager and one part time dog.
  • The other house just across the road has six adults and two cats.
  • Your room is north facing, street level approx 4m x 3.5m.
  • The house has four storeys, two bathrooms, a large living/dining room area and a south facing garden where we grow fruit and vegetables.
  • Many of the house members are queer and passionate about living sustainably and in community.
  • You would become part of the Golem community, whose members organise things like queer nights and queer life drawing

This sounds perfect! How do I apply?

Simply fill in this form and send us an email at recruitment.golem@gmail.com to tell us that you're interested in joining!

Rent starts at £270 per month (you can choose to pay more proportionate to your income if you earn a comfortable amount) and £70 bills (which may change as energy prices change). We don't ask for a deposit or references to make living here more financially accessible and easier.

What's the process?

  1. Fill in the joining questionnaire - both houses will then review this
  2. At each stage of the process, you can make sure this is still right for you and so can we
  3. We'll invite you around for a cup of tea
  4. We'll invite you around for dinner
  5. You'll attend one of our monthly house meetings which you'll need to attend once you join
  6. You'll cook dinner for the house members (which you'd need to do every week if you live here)
  7. Success! If you and the Golems are still happy after all these stages, you can move in!
This process can take a while and may seem lengthy, but living in a housing cooperative is a lot of work and commitment so we want to ensure that you'd fit in and be prepared to put in the work required to live here.

You'll see during the process that you can also have a lot of fun living here - we can't wait to live with you!
